8 Reasons to use a VPN

As technology continues to advance, our security needs to get a lot stronger. Firewalls and anti-virus software is all well and good but we need to go beyond that. With that in mind, a VPN has gone from something occasionally useful to a necessity for most people. Here are eight reasons why you should use one:

1. Security

One of the biggest reasons to use a VPN is the extra security that it provides you. In a world in which so much that we do is online, not least banking and managing credit cards and things, this gives you another layer of comfort that your details are safe and secure.

2. Secure public Wi-Fi

We probably only realise it when it isn’t available to us, but when we are roaming around in public places, free Wi-Fi is becoming more of a necessity, however, there are security issues with public Wi-Fi, especially when it comes to entering in data into fields, particularly passwords. You can get around this with a VPN.

3. Messaging app safety

A huge change in the way we communicate these days is the enhancement of messaging apps such as Skype and Whatsapp, but these are not all encrypted, which opens them up for your messages to be intercepted. A VPN can take that away.

4. Anonymity

This is a big reason why people are using a VPN more. Your browsing history and activity can be tracked if you are, say, shopping around for deals on holidays or cars etc. Using a VPN can allow you to maintain an anonymous profile allowing you to shop privately.

5. Overseas censorship

When we go on holiday we want to do all the touristy things, but in downtime, we still want to surf our favourite websites, not all of which are available in every country. A VPN provides you with a proxy IP, which means you can get around any national censorship.

6. Gaming

This one is two-fold. Firstly, it means you can play your favourite games anywhere around the world, and secondly, you get extra security from any rogue attacks that might come your way from frustrated gamers you beat or the like.

7. Social Media

In some countries, certain social media sites are blocked or restricted, but with this being a way to maintain contact with friends and family, especially when you are away from home, a VPN will allow you to access your profiles and continue engaging with the world.

8. Privacy

We all have email and cloud accounts these days, but we should never ignore the potential for them to be hacked. However, if we use a VPN, we can control our privacy much more, which is so important in this day and age.
